The Need

Middleville is overdue for a true public library

It is time to provide our area with a stand-alone space with increased business hours, library materials and programming options.

Current Middleville TK Public Library

It is currently combined with and exists within the Thornapple Kellogg High School.

It is open a limited time: Tuesday and Thursday 3:30 -7:30 and Saturday 9:30- 1:30.

It has a shared librarian and staff with the High School.

Challenges of the Current Library

  • Lack of access by the public.
  • It is not open during the school day.
  • There is limited programming for children, Senior Citizens.
  • Access to technology for residents is very limited.

Funding Information

The current public library budget is about $19,000. Budget comes from state aid and penal fines. Most of this budget is dedicated to Lakeland Co-op. TK Schools provide staffing, building and utilities.

Most public libraries are funded by a local millage.

Operational millage is currently not possible because the TK Public Library is a combined collection. The fiscal agent is TK Schools.

What if Middleville did not have a public library?

TK Public Library Cards would cease to work, which wouldn’t matter much because Middleville wouldn’t have a public library to use them in.

TK Public Library Cards would cease to work at ANY public library.

Residents who use their TK Public Library Cards to access ebooks and audiobooks could no longer check these items out.

Patrons would need to pay for a non-resident card through an alternate library.
